Sea Otter 2024: Si Richardson checks out the Pinarello Dogma XC, Topeak tools, Time pedals and more

It’s fair to say that after a couple of days browsing the stands at the Sea Otter Classic, near Monterey in California, Si Richardson’s getting close to exhaustion. However, the wealth of stunning new kit has kept him going and he wants to show you even more of what some of the top brands in the world have to offer. Here’s his third and final instalment of hot new tech from Sea Otter 2024…

FiftyOne’s Sika bike

FiftyOne's new Sika road bike

FiftyOne is an Irish brand which has been building a reputation for its custom carbon frames over the last ten years. It displayed its new Sika road frame at Sea Otter which has been designed for everyday riders rather than pros, according to FiftyOne. It features 40mm tyre clearance, a 690g weight for a medium-sized frame and some sleek airfoil tube shaping to help make it nice and aero.

Industry Nine wheelset

Although more well-known in mountain bike circles, Industry Nine displayed its new all-road wheelset which sits alongside its existing Solix range for road and gravel bikes. It’s 40mm deep, 25mm wide internally, hooked, aero-optimised for 30-42mm wide tyres and has a freehub that sounds amazing. How amazing? Well, you’ll have to watch and listen to Si’s demo in the video above for more on that. Suffice it to say we literally had to drag him away from the stand…

Topeak multi-tool and bottle cage

There is plenty of new gear coming from Topeak this year but Si focuses on the new Nano series of multi-tools. As the name might suggest, these are designed to have limited impact in the weight stakes when it comes to stashing them on your bike. The Nano 11, for example, comes in at just 74g which is achieved by using an aluminium frame with a slimmer version of each tool. Topeak has even managed to pair the 5mm Allen key with the flathead screwdriver to make an 8mm Allen key, which we think is pretty nifty.

Topeak also featured a carbon Shuttle bottle cage which is unique in that 50% of it is made from recycled wind turbine blades - that’s a new one on us!

5Dev’s Road Gravel crank

5Dev's Road Gravel crank is a super bling bit of kit and lightweight to boot!

If it’s super-bling cranks you’re looking for then check out the latest offering from 5Dev. Made from titanium, the crank is CNC-machined with the back plate and then welded on. The crank itself is hollow so it is super-light at 450g and the one Si got his hands on was paired with the new aero chainring to make a stunning combo. It’s possible to fit this to a road bike, gravel bike or even a mountain bike with the appropriate sized axle length.

Pinarello Dogma XC

This is the bike specifically designed by Pinarello for Tom Pidcock who has been racing and winning on it for about a year now. The big news, which we recently reported here on the GCN website, is that it’s now available to buy. Si was also lucky enough to get hold of one for a video coming out on GCN soon, so keep an eye out for that!

Time pedals

As with most new product launches that come with bold claims, Time tells us that its new Xpro 12 SL pedals are the lightest road pedals on the market at 259g, including cleats. They come in three different axle links which helps with getting Q-Factor right, the importance of which GCN.

Visma-Lease a bike helmet

This one doesn’t need much of an introduction. The Giro Aerohead helmet got more than its fair share of publicity after its introduction at the first stage of this year's Tirreno-Adriatico, dividing opinion across the cycling fraternity. There’s no denying the tech and research that has gone into its design though, with Giro telling us how it also considered a new specific TT position of riders like Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert during the process. Of course, Si couldn’t resist trying it on – once he’d figured out which way around to wear it!

Hiplok security system

Hiplok has become renowned for producing some of the toughest bike security systems around. Previously having introduced an angle grinder-resistant D-Lock, it is now showcasing its newer, longer version, featuring all the toughness of its predecessor for increased versatility. Paired with its new ground anchor, it is set to offer enhanced security and help prevent any point of weakness when it comes to safely storing a bike.
